CEL-FI GO Enables Temperature Monitoring for Effective COVID-19 Vaccine Storage

Summary

Challenge

  • Large community hospital had poor cellular coverage in the basement pharmacy where vaccines were stored
  • Third-party solution used to monitor refrigeration could not receive temperature data due to the lack of cellular coverage
  • Reliable AT&T signal was needed in the pharmacy to continuously monitor refrigeration temperature for the vaccines

Solution

Results

  • Reliable AT&T signal in the pharmacy
  • Refrigeration temperature monitored and maintained
  • Quick and easy set-up

The Challenge

A community hospital in southern California did not have cellular coverage in the basement of the building, which housed the hospital pharmacy. Vaccines were being stored in a refrigerator in the pharmacy and its temperature had to be monitored. The hospital’s temperature monitoring solution, which was managed by a third party, used a probe inside the refrigerator where the vaccines were stored along with a device outside the refrigerator that sends and receives data via a 3G cellular signal from AT&T. The third party responsible for monitoring the vaccine temperature could not receive the critical information. RSRF, an expert in small cell and Distributed Antenna System (DAS) solutions, was brought in to fix the problem and ensure there was a useable AT&T signal in the pharmacy.
“We had our technician go over to the pharmacy and take some cell signal measurements from within the secure environment. Typically, we run antenna cables in a vertical chase or a vertical raceway from an IT closet or an MDF room, but in this case that wasn’t the option, because the customer wanted a specific solution that ran from the pharmacy,” says Tom Hernandez, vice president of operations and sales at RSRF.

The Solution

According to Hernandez, RSRF chose CEL-FI GO X as the solution to bring the outside AT&T 3G signal into the pharmacy. “We are very familiar with CEL-FI GO X,” says Hernandez. “It is a nice platform because it allows us to configure the system to amplify any of the carrier signals.”

The CEL-FI GO X Smart Signal Booster is the first carrier-class indoor / outdoor cellular coverage solution to feature industry leading 100 dB system gain and Nextivity’s unconditionally network safe guarantee. GO X maximizes cellular coverage for 3G / 4G / LTE in spaces up to 15,000 sq. ft. CEL-FI GO X can be placed indoors or outdoors and is ideal for any location that does not receive a cellular signal. The CEL-FI GO X antenna can also be positioned inside or outside a building, depending on the use case and best available signal strength.
“CEL-FI GO X was a really good solution because it can be configured as a single-carrier solution,” explains Hernandez. RSRF ran coax cable above the ceiling tiles from the pharmacy – around 200 feet – to where the donor antenna was mounted. A Yagi antenna was pointed towards the cell tower that provided a usable signal.
CEL-FI GO X is ideal for use in commercial properties, government buildings, agricultural settings, small manufacturing operations, rural areas, businesses, and large homes. Artificial intelligence and Nextivity’s award-winning Intelliboost signal processing deliver the industry’s best voice and data wireless performance. It’s guaranteed to be unconditionally network safe and does not interfere with other wireless devices. CEL-FI GO X is FCC and CE Certified, and available in multiple band configurations for use on global mobile networks. The system is NEMA 4 rated so it can be placed in a variety of outdoor applications.

  • Services include small cell, active, hybrid and passive DAS.
  • Enterprise customers include:
  • Hospitals and medical care facilities
  • Military installations
  • Commercial office and multi-unit residential buildings
  • Hotels and resorts
  • Industrial, manufacturing, and warehouse facilities
  • Educational institutions retail stores to multi-family residential units, and from busy hospitals to industrial warehouses

The Results

It took a team of two only one day to run the cable and install CEL-FI GO X to bring a useable AT&T cell signal into the pharmacy. The third-party monitoring solution is now able to send and receive refrigeration temperature data, alleviating concerns about effective vaccine storage.
“With CEL-FI GO X, we were able to solve a signal issue for an IoT solution specific to the pharmacy just as the client wanted, and it was mission accomplished,” explains Hernandez.
