Removing the Guesswork

Nextivity proprietary IntelliBoost software inside SHIELD public safety solutions enables them to automate system parameters that no other ERCES can do. By automatically calculating and setting system parameters, SHIELD EXTEND allows installers to deploy an ERCES faster and with more confidence it will pass the first AHJ inspection than with other solutions.

  • Real-time monitoring of environmental changes and automatic adjustments (if necessary) to ensure consistent, reliable performance
  • Automatic setting/optimization of uplink (UL) gain (no additional testing equipment or calculation guessing)
  • Automatic calculation of path loss, allowing for different values according to network requirements
  • Isolation calculated in real-time and automatically set at 20 dB per NFPA 1221 (the system also allows for different values according to local ordinances)
  • Downlink (DL) gain automatically adjusted to achieve required value

System Components

Management Unit

The management Unit (MU) is the central point of the system. In addition to accepting and distributing power from the SHIELD EXTEND Battery Backup Unit (BBU), the MU controls and monitors all system components, including the Network Unit (NU), Coverage Unit (CU), and accessory components. System performance analytics are available in the Nextivity WAVE Portal or WAVE PRO app.

Network Unit

With its two donor ports, the NU processes and digitizes the off-air LMR and FirstNet donor signals and distributes those signals to the CUs. Each NU can support and power up to six CUs via PoE.

Coverage Unit

The CUs rebroadcast LMR and FirstNet donor signals to local service antennas throughout the facility. They are self-configuring and self-optimizing, enabling faster system deployment and certification.

SHIELD EXTEND Battery Backup Unit

The Battery Backup Unit (BBU) provides constant direct current and battery charging capabilities for SHIELD EXTEND systems. In the event of a power failure, the BBU allows SHIELD EXTEND to maintain peak operation for up to 12 hours. In addition to being NEMA 4 rated and listed to UL 2524, the BBU supports four 12-volt lead-acid batteries and includes accessories for wall mounting and cabling for connecting to the MU.

SHIELD EXTEND Fiber Range Extender (Optional)

Ideal for campuses, multi-building facilities, and high-rises, the SHIELD EXTEND Fiber Range Extenders (FRE) increase the distance between the SHIELD EXTEND NU and CU up to nearly one mile. In addition to supporting copper cable to power up CUs remotely, FREs work in pairs and are sold as a kit that includes two units—one NU side and one CU side—with each pair supporting up to two CUs.

The SHIELD EXTEND integrated public safety DAS sets a new standard for performance, ease of installation, and scalability for emergency communication systems. This streamlined process speeds up installation times, allowing buildings owners to get their systems approved by AHJs and receive their CoO as fast as possible.

The RA also offers real-time component monitoring through the WAVE Portal.

SHIELD Emergency Power-Off Switch

The Emergency Power-Off Switch (EPO) instantaneously shuts down a SHIELD EXTEND system from a single point, eliminating the risk of combustion caused by electricity or static. The EPO is designed to prevent inadvertent operation and can be installed in any location designated by the local AHJ. In addition to being NEMA 4 rated and complying with NFPA and IFC fire codes, the EPO features PoE architecture for quick installation and configuration.

SHIELD Active Server Antenna

The Active Server Antenna is an active multi-frequency, omnidirectional antenna for emergency communication solutions that require monitoring capabilities at the component level. In addition to being designed for hard cap and false ceilings, the Active Server Antenna features an N-type female connector and rugged IP20 grade electronics. The component is ideal for SHIELD EXTEND installations, providing real-time antenna monitoring capabilities through the Nextivity WAVE Portal.
